I always seek an excuse to switch out our book collection and add a few new ones to the nightly rotation. The changing of the seasons or a holiday is the perfect reason.
We love Halloween in this house and have already pulled out the Halloween books to get into the spirit. These stories are perfect for toddlers and young kids alike, and they’re some of my favorite books to read too!

In a Spooky Haunted House: A Pop-Up Adventure
A short and sweet pop-up book that’s more cutsy than scary. We love the three-dimensional scenes filled with all our favorite Halloween characters!

The Leaf Thief
The Leaf Thief is a fun and quirky story about a squirrel that offers a playful way to introduce children to the changing seasons and why some trees lose their leaves. After reading this book, we now enjoy spotting which trees in our neighborhood shed their leaves and which ones don’t. It’s a fall classic in our house!

Bonaparte Falls Apart
Bonaparte Falls Apart is a charming and humorous story about Bonaparte, a little skeleton who’s falling to pieces—literally! As he tries to figure out how to keep himself together, he learns the value of friendship and problem-solving. This delightful tale, perfect for the Halloween season or any time of year, is filled with lighthearted moments that make it great for young readers who may be dealing with their own “falling apart” moments, like starting school. The fun illustrations and witty dialogue had my kids giggling, while the message about teamwork and resilience made it a hit for parents too.

Beware, Beware the Noise Out There!
This is quickly becoming a new favorite book for the Halloween season! Each page has sound buttons with classic Halloween noises that make my son excited to read it over and over again every night.

Ghost Afraid of the Dark
We love Boo the ghost! Ghost Afraid of the Dark is a sweet and relatable story about a little ghost who, despite being a creature of the night, is scared of the dark. The whimsical illustrations and heartwarming message make it a comforting bedtime read, especially during the Halloween season. It’s a wonderful mix of spooky fun and an empowering message for children learning to face their fears. The glow in the dark cover is also a hit!

Little Blue Truck’s Halloween
We’re big fans of the Little Blue Truck series in this house so of course my toddler requested the Halloween story. This flip the flap book has all the farm characters we love with a seasonal twist. This quick read is always in the nightly rotation!

Don’t Push the Button! A Halloween Treat: A Spooky Fun Interactive Book For Kids
We love Don’t Push the Button so of course we had to get the Halloween addition and it’s just a fun and silly as the original!

Room on the Broom
This might be our favorite Halloween book. The illustrations are beautiful and the rhythmic prose is fun to read. We started reading this last Halloween when my son was two and I can see us reading it for several more years. This book is from the same author and illustrator as the beloved, The Gruffalo!

The Little Kitten
The Little Kitten is an enchanting picture book that beautifully captures the magic of childhood and the special bond between a child and animals. This heartwarming tale is beloved in our house, captivating both my toddler and myself with its gentle narrative and lovely illustrations. Its charming story, lovely artwork, and warm message make it a perfect pick for autumn.
